I know that my review is a little late, my reasoning behind that is I wanted to wait until the end of the bank holiday opening weekend to see the box office numbers and overall takings. Batman V Superman DOJ stood the proverbial champion of the box office weekender; alas no more. Civil War has surpassed it with a whopping 400 million plus takings so far and the numbers keep going up; it hasn’t even been released in the states yet. Sorry DC.

On the 26th of April I attended the Premier of Captain America: Civil War at the Westfield Shopping Center in London. The horde of Marvel fans was just that, a horde! The numbers of attendees surpassed 2000 people by 7am the day of the Premier, to say Marvel can’t bring a crowd is an understatement. After watching the show and the stars walked the red carpet, I took my seat inside the cinema and watched the magic happen.

To give Civil War a decent review I have to first make you understand that we were never going to get the graphic novel “Civil War” it was going to be impossible to make that movie in the MCU with the characters we have already been introduced to, unless you split it into 3 separate movies; but what we’ve got is just as good, in this writers honest opinion.

Development of Civil War started in late 2013 when Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely began writing the screenplay, borrowing concepts from the 2006 comic book storyline Civil War, and then in 2014 the Russo brothers were brought back to direct after positive reactions to test screenings of The Winter Soldier.

The film’s title was a surprise reveal in October 2014 when crowds thought the title was “Serpent Society” and Downey was announced to join, with additional cast members included in the following months. Brought back to action were the likes of Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man). These Avengers we know and love and to have so many back without it being an “Avengers” titled film was pretty impressive; not to mention the supporting cast of,  Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, Sharon Carter, Frank Grillo as CrossBones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “thunderbolt” Ross and Daniel Brühl as main villain Zemo.

But that wasn’t the end of the Hype train as Chadwick Boseman, aka T’Challa aka The Black Panther, was added and then the hype bomb went off with a character that all fans wanted, nay, needed; Peter Parker aka Spider-Man! A must for this geek as he played such a pivotal roll in the Civil War Comics.

So the story, with many people fearing the actions of super heroes, the government decides to push for the Anti-Hero Registration Act or as it’s called in the film “Cerkovian law”, a law that limits a heroes actions and to be only deployed in extreme circumstances by the UN security Council. This results in a division within The Avengers.

Tony Stark stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed and people will continue to die, but Steve Rogers feels that the restrictions put on them by the world governments will only lead to them being unable to react to certain threats and so, ironically cause more death and destruction.

This divide, starts off as a heated debate but soon, mostly due to the captains loyalty to Bucky, ends in all out war between the group.

The Film itself has it’s moments of greatness with excitement, fast pace and fun( Antman, giving us some great laughs in true Rudd fashion) but, and I hate that I have to use the but, it felt like the story ended too suddenly and we didn’t quite get the resolution we wanted.  Also for a Captain America titled film it centres far too much around Iron Man and the Way Stark wants to run with things; you feel its more IRON MAN 3.5 than a Cap film and that for me is a shame; especially after the amazing Captain America: Winter soldier.

On top of this it would seem like we lost out on a bit more Spiderman due to the uncertainty of the agreement with Sony. This obviously was to the advantage  of T’Challa, who had had originally a much smaller role in the earlier drafts. However, when it looked like Marvel would not be getting permission to use Spider-Man, Black Panther’s role was beefed up significantly and by the time they had confirmed Spider-Man, T’Challa had already become so integral to the plot that they decided to leave his role as is and give Spider-Man a smaller part.

Not to belittle Black panthers roll, as I think he was a great addition, but Bad times for Spidey fans. But hey at least he was in it and that moment Stark says “UNDEROOS!” and Tom Holland make his Marvel début by webbing up caps hands, pinching his shield and land effortlessly on the roof of a truck was totally worth it.

All in all, maybe I am being slightly over picky about a film I did genuinely enjoy but I cant quite give it that extra 1.5 stars. Was it everything it could have been? Not quite. Was it still worth the watch.. damn right it was!

Anyway, this is just my humble opinion and we would love to know yours; let us know yours in the comments below…..
