It is here, the first look at Melissa Benoist as Supergirl for the CBS pilot.

The costume is designed by three time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who already left her mark on DC TV properties Arrow and The Flash, This design stays somewhat true to some of the depictions in her comic appearances and thankfully remains heroic and not over sexualised. Atwood commented on her creation “I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,”

We still have the cute skirt and of course the all important cape and boots, and I’m particulary impressed with the emblem, recognisable and true to the source material. The addition of tights just makes sense. It can get a little chilly flying around the added protection, I for one, would welcome.

It is quite pleasing to see that the make up for the character is reflects natural beauty with a touch of colour, reassuring me the makers are indeed going to focus on the development of her as a hero and stay away from portraying her as a sex symbol. There was always a worry about how ‘sexy’ they are going to make the characters appearance, they could have gone with something like this

Thankfully that is not the case and the first images very much please me, she looks like an average girl about to embark on heroics and become something ‘super’. The show is about to take a very big step with a female lead character, something DC are yet to do in the cinematic universe. One of the executive producers, Greg Berlanti, has already tested the waters with the portrayal of Black Canary(ies), Huntress and Talia Al Ghul in Arrow, all strong independent characters with good story arcs, which bodes well for this new project.

The series will follow Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Benoist), and true to the original material, Kara is Superman’s cousin who leaves Krypton and hides her powers. Aged 24, Kara embraces her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. The show will co star Calista Flockhart as Kara’s boss Cat Grant, Mehad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers Kara’s sister and David Harewood as villain Hank Henshaw, Helen Slater, the 1984 film portrayal of Supergirl, and Superman Dean Cain from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman are set to appear but their roles remain a mystery.

Are you happy with the costume choice? How well do you think this TV show will fair? Hit us up on Twitter & Facebook and let us know what  you think.
