Edgar Wright and Marvel go their separate ways

In 2006, Edgar Wright was named by Marvel Studios as the director for Ant-Man. Now, just as the much delayed project seemed to be picking up speed with the test footage shown at Comic-Con 2012 and cast announcements with the likes of Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, there have been reports that Wright has left the project.

In a joint statement released on the 23/05/2014, both Marvel and Wright announced that they had parted ways due to differences in creative visions of the film. “The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.”

This wouldn’t be the first time a Marvel film has changed director – back in 2008 director Matthew Vaughn left Thor to be replaced by Kenneth Branagh. Even the sequel, Thor: The Dark World, found itself director-less when Patty Jenkins left over creative differences, allowing Alan Taylor to step in and take over.

However, despite the split being “amicable” it still comes as no less a surprise – Edgar Wright has been attached to the film for eight years, and Wright had often been referred by Marvel Studios as an integral part of the film’s progression – the Comic-Con footage was not only to demonstrate how Ant-Man could work on the big-screen, but also how Wright had envisioned the character.

The new director still has yet to be announced.
