I was a mere 9 years old when Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice came out. The supernatural comedy is one of those films from my childhood burnt into my mind with feelings of fondness and joy. I consider it huge influence on my tastes and an important contributor to my inner geek.
Over the years we have heard the odd comment here and there about the possibility of a sequel. This is something I am a little wary of; there is always the concern that it will be utter crap and therefore taint the original. The only way I would be happy for this to happen is for the original players to be involved. Well, we may just be in luck.
This week the rumours have stepped up a notch with Keaton revealing a little more information that suggests it’s closer to happening then ever before. Whilst talking to MTV for a Robocop press junket Keaton was asked about a sequel and this is what he had to say:
“I’ve e-mailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff,” Keaton said. “I always said that’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another.
“Now it looks like he is involved,” Keaton continued, “And without giving too much away we’ve talked to each other, and e-mailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.”
Exciting stuff! If you have Burton then you’re pretty much set to go. Add to that Winona Ryder previously talking about involvement in a Beetlejuice project that was not a re-make but a sequel set 27 years later and writer Seth Grahame-Smith’s tweet from March 2013 – the following picture with the words “It’s showtime….” Looks like everything is heading in the right direction.
Next comes the waiting game but with many ingredients already in the pot, hopefully we won’t be left waiting too long. Watch this space because as soon as there is more news I shall bring it to you, sandworms and all.
