The internet is a lovely hotbed of rumour and the potential casting for David Ayer’s upcoming DC masterpiece, The Suicide Squad, is no exception. With a 2016 release date, casting decisions are likely to be finalised in coming months, so it’s natural that the speculation is hotting up.
Based on the DC comic of the same name, The Suicide Squad is based around the concept of the government granting a group of super-villains one last shot at redemption by sending them on a mission which is likely to result in their deaths. Leto is not the only big name being thrown around with regards to this project, with Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie also apparently in talks to be involved. Ryan Gosling was hotly tipped for The Joker but was unwilling to commit to multiple films so the rumour mill has latched on to Jared Leto as hot favourite.
Since winning his Oscar for Dallas Buyer’s Club, Leto has had Hollywood eagerly waiting to see what his next move is and with such an award under his belt, it’s understandable that he will be considering his next role very carefully. The Joker is an iconic role and whilst Heath Ledger more than stepped up to the mark, there was a time when Hollywood baulked at the mere thought of him playing the role. There’s no doubt that there are some big shoes to fill, with memorable performances from both Ledger and Jack Nicholson becoming audience favourites. Whether the rumours are true or not, at least we get amazing fan art like this to keep us excited about the project.
As of yet, both Warner Bros and Jared Leto’s representatives have been unavailable to comment on the speculation.
