Last night, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson announced a massive milestone via his twitter account.

I got an email. We’ve reached 100 million registered users on the original Minecraft. 14.3% conversion rate to paid accounts. Wow. 😀 <3

The original Minecraft referred to in the Tweet is the PC/Mac version of the game. Registration is required via the Mojang website before being able to play the demo or buying the full game. As you can see from the Tweet this means they have sold 14.3 million copies of the game so far. Of course on top of that there are the console and mobile versions of the game.

All in all, Notch has proved to the world that Indie development isn’t just viable but can challenge the AAA publishers for profits.
