A Tale of Internet Spaceships – EVE Documentary will be released free online from 11th July 2014

EVE Online is one of the world’s leading MMO’s. In it’s 11th year. the galactic sized sandbox where players compete for resources, territory, bragging rights and those ever precious newbie tears is stronger than ever and surviving considerably better than some other veteran MMO’s.

While EVE doesn’t boast the player base of some other veteran MMO’s like World of Warcraft, (EVE had ~500k players compared to WoWs 8m at the close of 2013), it does have an incredibly passionate population of players, united through their shared experiences in the single shard EVE universe, New Eden.

EVE has sparked controversy over the years as its approach to player governance is rather sparse, leaving the players to form the universe and the rules that dwell within. This has led to some of the largest space combat battles featuring thousands of players and seen the overthrow of player run corporations (EVEs version of Guilds for the uninitiated) and the theft of tens of thousands of dollars of virtual property within the game environment, and all completely inside the rules.

EVE gives you a breakdown of how far those rules can be stretched right here:

While this makes for a harsh and unforgiving environment, it also makes for a strong and binding community, one that’s set to last another 11 years and perhaps survive the dwindling interest in MMO’s as the mobile gaming generation pushes multiplayer in a less time dedicated direction.

That community is under observation in the documentary A Tale of Internet Spaceships which is released today following a successful Indiegogo campaign by a team of media students from Malmö University in Sweden.

The documentary, filmed during a fan convention in Reykjavik in April 2013, aims to give an in-depth look at what makes EVE Online special and why people devote so much of their lives to it. This candid exploration of a video game community investigates the sometimes complicated relationship between EVE’s dedicated player base and the game’s developers, CCP Games. It also documents one of the most tumultuous times in the game’s lifespan – the release of the Incarna expansion – which turned out to be one of the most important moments in the history of online roleplaying games.

A Tale of Internet Spaceships is a tale of dedicated fans, consumer power, conflict and redemption.

The entire project was crowd funded through Indiegogo by 82 funders, gathering the $3000 that made up its budget.

The premiere will be held at 8pm local time on July 11, 2014, at STPLN, Malmö, Sweden. At the same time, the one hour long film will be published for free to major video sites like YouTube and Vimeo.

Teaser trailer can be found here and subscribing to their Youtube channel will let you know when the full documentary is available later this evening.
