Memoria: PC Preview

daedalic-entertainment

The time of point and click adventures seem to be having somewhat of a resurgence as of late, and to me that’s just brilliant. I cut my gaming teeth so to speak on the incredible (if somewhat frustrating) Discworld, Monkey Island and Broken Sword games so I’m in love with Tell-Tale games and now Daedalic Entertainment. Tell-Tale for bringing me the wonderful Walking Dead series and latest Monkey Island and Daedalic for Memoria.

Now Memoria lets you take control over an unknown hero named Geron from a small town called Andergast. He is on a quest to save his fairy companion Nuri who following a confrontation with an unknown evil three months ago is trapped inside a ravens body. According to his friend there is a travelling merchant on the outskirts of town who holds the answer to his problem, it’s here where you take control of the other playable character in this epic fable.

The characters name is Princess Sadja, the last Princess in the far off land of Fasar. Her goal is to become a great hero and we join her a midst a war between humans and demons as her and a small party try to find the Mask of Malakkar rumored to have the power to change the tides of war.

The game has some great artwork, the backgrounds are well done, the music is just right and all of these are shown off in Memoria’s intro video which is a thing of beauty, it really expresses the nature of this game, it puts across to the player that they are about to embark on an epic quest and the gravity of the story-line ahead.

As with any game of this nature, there are times which the puzzles may seem inane or unconventional and I spent several minutes pressing my dagger up against anything the game would let me until it let me proceed with the story. However if like me your a veteran of these point-and-click adventure games then this will only serve as a minor annoyance to what is looking to become a great game if this preview is anything to go by.

Daedalic Entertainment maybe a relatively unknown quantity where Game Development is concerned for most people. This shouldn’t turn people off, this German company have been gathering up awards since 2008 like a vacuum cleaner, with 2 awards for Best Story award in 2009 for ‘The Whispered World’ and 2010 for ‘A New Beginning’. When this game comes out I’ll try and do a full review but from what I have seen in this preview they are gearing up for Best Story 2013.
