Now that we’ve all had a chance to let the shocking news about Disney purchasing Lucas Arts sink in, I’ve thinking… ‘Look what a great job they did with Robin Hood, what if they did something similar?’
Sure, it wouldn’t be our Star Wars, but lets be honest, episodes I, II and III were not the greatest; or were they? Looking back and watching them again, I must admit that they are not as bad as I remember, and are quite watchable and even enjoyable. Granted the likes of Jar Jar Binks, the worst box office performer-to-earnings Ewen McGregor and the still unanswered question of ‘why didn’t Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) disappear into thin air like Obi-Wan ‘I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine’ Kenobi (Alex Guinness) ‘ do take some getting over, but all in all they are not as bad as you think they are.
The franchise continued with the Cartoon Network’s highly rated Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Now given its success, the Clone Wars did feature a number of ‘inaccuracies’, but these have not stopped the show being a huge success. However, the Disney buyout means that the Clone Wars may leave the Cartoon Network and appear on the Disney Channel this coming year.
Should Disney intend to stick faithfully to the franchise, the bar is set (arguably) unattainably high and I think could be doomed to fail in all but box office takings. I’m sure episode VII won’t be as bad as Episodes I, II and III as Disney will not want another John Carter on their hands, but I for one would be more than willing to accept a new ‘alternative’ Star Wars, so long as it is along the lines of the Disney classic Robin Hood.
However, in putting my own private thoughts in black and white, always a dangerous thing, I will no doubt feel the wrath of the fan boys and girls. But just think about it, or another of your favourite Disney classics and let your mind consider the possibilities. Whether you agree or not, one thing I urge you to do is go and watch Disney’s Robin Hood.
