Emmerich to Launch New Stargate Movie Trilogy

stargate

Roland Emmerich is set to direct a new “reimagined” trilogy of Stargate films based on the 1994 film Stargate he directed and co-wrote with Dean Devlin. Devlin is set to produce the trilogy with MGM and Warner Bros backing the project.

However, with Emmerich pretty much tied up at the moment on the elusive Independence Day sequel which has a release date of 2016 and working on the gay rights drama, Stonewall, it may be a number of years before any progress is made on the Stargate trilogy.

There is absolutely no more information about the project at this stage. We don’t know if they will remake the original and continue the trilogy from there or whether the films will act as a continuation of the original film. It also begs the question as to whether Kurt Russell and James Spader will be involved in some way.

It has been 20 years since O’Neill and Jackson first stepped through the gate, the original film then went on to spawn three highly successful spin off series – SG1, Atlantis & Universe (okay, two successful series and Universe) creating a massive franchise and a loyal fan base, some of which are still campaigning for Universe to get another series. Sadly, it is unlikely the canon from the TV series will feature in the new films, but with a wealth of alien life form created from the series, Emmerich could use it as inspiration.

We will endeavour to keep you up to date as news comes, in the meantime what are your thoughts? As always comment below or on the facebook page.
