Good sci-fi is hard to find, but it seems that CBS, in collaboration Amblin Studios is determined to prove the nay-sayers wrong and bring us a new promising series: Extant. Staring Halle Berry (Monster Ball, X-Men), Goran Visnjic (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, ER) and Pierce Gagnon (Looper) as the core characters, the show will premiere on CBS come July 9th.
The very brief synopsis that can be found on the CBS webpage for Extant leaves quite a lot of room for imagination, but it sure served to pique my interest:
In a thrilling drama, Berry will play an astronaut who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history.
Keep an eye out for that very important word: solo. Since her character seemingly returns from space sporting a pregnancy, we can only assume whatever comes next is going to push is into quite an interesting ride. Given that Halle Berry isn’t known for accepting television roles with ease, we can only assume that Steven Spielberg’s involvement might have played apart in her decision, but I doubt that if Extant’s script would’ve been lacking, she would’ve said yes, so fingers crossed for another sci-fi series that will make history. It’s been a while since I’ve seen one that could actually hold a candle to some of the classics.
