The iconic film and cartoon many of us remember from our childhoods is getting it’s own hobby gamer version courtesy of the board game publishing giants, Cryptozoic Entertainment who have the DC Deck builder series, the Walking Dead board game (the bad pretty one, not the good ugly one) and the Adventure Time Card Wars game amongst their huge array of licensed titles on the market.
How does it play? Well I better let Crypto explain:
Ghostbusters: The Board Game is an episodic adventure game for one to four players, who are charged with busting ghosts and sealing gates to the Spirit World. The game is customizable, cooperative, and highly re-playable. It features unique illustrations and figures based on original artwork and designs by Dan Schoening, the artist of IDW’s Ghostbusters comic book series. Each Ghostbuster has a distinct role and unlocks unique abilities by gaining experience. The game offers modes for different levels of players, making it accessible to beginners and challenging to experts. Now is your chance to save the world!
Now a lot of you will be pretty excited (DON’T CROSS THE STREAMS!), as was I. It looks like it’ll be pacey, playable on your own or with three friends, and feature fan-favourites like Slimer, Zool and of course, the Stay Puft marshmallow man.
Crypto are using Kickstarter to bring this game to the general populace. Now, putting aside my slight dislike for big companies using Kickstarter as a pre-sales system, it’s clear that Ghostbusters is going to be a big hit, having smashed it’s $250000 target already and now knocking over stretch goals with gusto.
Just be wary. Crypto are notoriously hit and miss with their games, often fronting the IP ahead of the game play or making a game big and expensive without delivering on the fun factor. Just from watching the video, I was left with the impression that the Ghostbuster franchise was very much being used to wow-up a fairly basic game. Don’t get me wrong; there’s absolutely nothing wrong with simple games, I’m just cautious when the only people they feature in the video appear to be cosplayers and not hobby gamers themselves. I just hope my fears are unjustified, as this is a great looking game with some cracking looking miniatures and a ton of extra gubbins to add if you want the full game experience.
