NBC announced last night that Heroes will be returning to our screens in 2015!

The show, which followed the lives of everyday people who developed superpowers in the aftermath of a solar eclipse, was met with great success when it originally aired in 2006, and served to launch the careers of Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), Hayden Panettiere (Nashville), and bolster that of Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) amongst many others. It did, however, begin to fall in popularity after the second and third seasons, and was eventually cancelled in 2010, following a massive decline in audience numbers and heavy criticism.
It is unclear as of yet as to whether the new 13-part miniseries will be a direct continuation of the story or an entirely new plot line, but Jennifer Salke, President of NBC Entertainment, did suggest that members of the original cast could be ‘popping back in’. Masi Oka, who played time-travelling Hiro on the show, hinted at a possible return in a tweet following the airing of the teaser trailer last night.

Tim Kring, the creative mind behind the original series, is also confirmed to be involved in Heroes Reborn, but story details are otherwise thin on the ground as the show will be ‘shrouded in secrecy’ until we are closer to its air date. In a statement, Salke had the following to say:
“”The enormous impact Heroes had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening. Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another instalment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.”
While it is not clear how successful the show will be, given the way that many fans became disillusioned with the original series after the plot lines became increasingly convoluted and long-winded, it would be great to see some good sci-fi back on our screens. We’ll definitely be keeping our eye on this one!
