Star Wars Pinball Review – 9 GPPs

Straight to the Point: A must have for fans of Star Wars and pinball alike.

Star Wars pinball is an add-on pack for Zen Pinball 2, which is a free app on most consoles, phones and tablets. Over the last few years, Zen studios have created some amazing tables based on popular games, films and comics; most notably, several packs based on Marvel characters. This pack consists of 3 tables, all based on the Star Wars films and cartoons.

Zen Pinball offers an experience no other pinball game I’ve played has been able to top; with realistic ball physics, LCD style displays, a number of changeable camera angles and the ability to nudge the table, plus animated characters and other objects are all among the bells and whistles which add to the experience, while sticking the game-play of the real thing.

Star Wars Tables

The 3 tables really capture the spirit of the films, and some classic scenes with animated models can be triggered, if you’re good enough. All the while, various classic sound bites can be heard. Here’s a little bit of info, plus a trailer for each table:

Boba Fett

This table is based on everyone’s favourite bounty hunter, with this character often hovering over the table. It also features favourite characters and creatures such as Jabba the Hutt, Darth Vader and  the Sarlacc. I particularly like the Han Solo in carbonite spin-gate feature on this table; a nice touch.

The Clone Wars

This table is based on the animated spin-off, The Clone Wars and is the weakest table; not because it’s the only one not based on the original trilogy but there’s just not as many features. There are more ramps than the other tables but not much else and less character animations, to trigger so it feels a bit dull at times. This is by no means a bad table,  just not as fun as the other two.

Episode V

This table is based on the most popular of the films, The Empire Strikes Back, and this is my favourite table as there’s constantly, so much going on.  It has a light saber plunger and other table features also use this iconic weapon, plus characters like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Storm Troopers can appear and fight each other;vehicles like tie-fighters and AT-ATs also make an appearance. My favourite features on this table are the R2-D2 bumpers. This table has it all!

Conclusion

Overall, this a great collection, maybe the best one for Zen Pinball so far, not just for the theme but also the table layouts; the only table from another pack; which  may be a contender is one from the Avengers Assemble collection, where the player could also choose their pinball; different designs symbolising each avenger. All tables also feature leaderboards and a multiplayer mode, if you’re feeling competitive.

The one downside of the Star Wars collection is that it only features 3 tables, while the other collections have included 4 for the same price. You won’t be grumbling about this as you start playing any of these tables though; they are super addictive.

If you want to try out any of the Star Wars tables, or any of the other great tables featured in Zen Pinball; trial versions are available on most formats.
