X-Wing Miniatures: Imperial Aces

I recently picked up the X-Wing Miniatures Game, and as per Popeoldhams review, I agree whole heartedly with Pope’s assessment.  However I am going to take a look at the first Ace’s box set to be released, the Imperial Aces.

Firstly the models are amazing, perfectly cast and painted superbly.  Two Tie Interceptors, one from the Imperial Royal Guard and the other from the elite Sabre Squadron.  Of course within the box you get loads of card tokens, including extra numbering tokens, focus, evade etc.  Character wise you get four basic pilots, two Royal Guards and two Sabre Squadron and then four other characters.  Carnor Jax and Kir Kanos both fly the symbolic Red Interceptor, whilst Tetran Cowall and Lieutenant Lorrir fly the Sabre Squadron Interceptor (Red stripe down the side; it doesn’t go faster).

Four Interceptors, two of them from Imperial Aces.

Carnor Jax is a ship nullifier, as his ability stops any enemy ship with range performing actions.  This is a great ability, but unless you’re on someone’s tail, it can be a costly one.  Kir Kanos allows you to punish your opponent for you being cautious, turning an evade into an extra hit.  Both these are pretty brutal, but considering the lack of shields on them, you may wish to go for a cheaper option.  Tetran Cowell has the annoying ability to perform koiogran turns at 1, 3 and 5 speed, meaning he can just turn on a dime.  Tough to tie down (see what I did there), but again the lack of shields on Interceptors makes them quite vulnerable.  Finally Lieutenant Lorrir is another nimble Interceptor pilot, allowing you to do barrel rolls using the 1 curve template instead.

It would appear that the box gives you two Interceptors that can be used for either damage or agility style games.  You also get in the box twelve upgrade cards (Elite Talents, Titles and Modifications), two of them especially for the Tie Interceptor.  With that I would say the Imperial Aces box is well worth it, when you consider the price of a single ship, this box actually saves you a bit of cash.  Prices vary depending on location but expect to pay between 20-25 for this box set.  If you play Rebels don’t fear, the Rebel Aces box will be out in Quarter 3 this year (Next three months).
