One piece of news to come out of E3 is the latest on the upcoming Mortal Kombat X. The new game will be the follow up to 2011’s Mortal Kombat which took the iconic beat ’em up back to basics and introduced new elements at the same time. The announcement trailer for Mortal Kombat X featured classic fan favourite characters Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting in an atmospheric forest at night. An additional new gameplay trailer shows off a few more aspects of the upcoming game.
The gameplay trailer again primarily featuring Scorpion and Sub-Zero includes new bone crunching X-ray moves, a new element introduced in the last game and interactive environments with characters able to use weapons and objects as featured in developer NetherRealm Studio’s last game Injustice: Gods Among Us.
One of the other standouts from the gameplay trailer though is the appearance of new characters, D’Vorah, a lithe insect winged female fighter with an affinity for bugs and the duo of Ferra and Torr (seemingly inspired by Master Blaster from 80’s film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome). Ferra is a diminutive girl and a nimble blade wielding fighter who rides on the back of Torr, a hulking heavy hitting beast with a hidden face.
The trailer also showcases some of the brutal fatalities that the series is known for and glimpses of new characters can be seen here too. Introducing new characters to a long running game series is always difficult but necessary and NetherRealm seem to have done a good job so far.
Mortal Kombat X is set for a 2015 release on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. You can check out the new trailer below.
