Wigan Comic Con – Sunday 22nd June

With MCM London Comic Con over and a break from the bigger conventions such as London Film and Comic Con and MCM Manchester until July, I’d like to turn our lovely Geek Pride fans’ attention to a new event taking place in the North West in June.

On Sunday 22nd June, Robin Park Arena will play host to the very first Wigan Comic Con, a convention set up in conjunction with the Funky Figures store in Wigan, which is owned by organiser Paul Prescott. Running from 11am-4pm with early bird entry from 10am, Wigan Comic Con promises to be a great day out for con newbies as well as seasoned attendees.

kenny-bakerFor such a young event, the convention already has a few impressive guests lined up who will be appearing and signing on the day. Star Wars fans will certainly not be disappointed, with appearances from Kenny Baker (R2D2), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) and Femi Taylor (Oola in Episode VI). Star Wars sculptor and artist, Brian Ian Muir, the man responsible for Darth Vader, the Storm Trooper armour and more, will also be attending the event.

Shaune Harrison is another interesting guest on the bill, a man who has worked on prosthetics and special effects make up for many films including Phantom Menace, the Harry Potter series, World War Z and more. He is also currently working on Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron.

Doctor Who star, Colin Baker, will surely be another popular guest, along with convention regular Lee Townsend. If you’re not familiar with his work, Lee Townsend is an artist that has been involved with Marvel, DC, Disney and Dreamworks and is perhaps most known for his work with Spider-Man and other Marvel favourites. Writer and Editor Alan Cowsill will also be attending, as well a former cop and journalist turned writer, Paul Finch.

It’s not all about the guests though, with the promise of lots of awesome displays and a great variety of stalls on offer as well as cosplay competitions. There will be an appearance from the infamous Transformers car, the Bumblebee Camaro and a Simpsons TV set style piece. There will be two competitions, one for the under 16s and another for the overs, which offers a chance for seasoned cosplayers to compete as well as getting the younger ones involved. Both competitions will feature prizes for individual categories as well as overall winners, make sure to check out the links featured at the end of the preview for more information.

There will also be some great goodies on offer such as retro games, cupcakes and American candy, original artwork, comic books, jewellery, collectibles and much, much more. I’ll even be attending and popping my comic con stall cherry with my little business, Geek Treats, selling cute and kitsch geeky jewellery and original comic book canvases. Nice little plug there, eh?

Considering this is the first full event for Wigan Comic Con, it looks set to be off to a great start. Geek Pride will be attending and covering the convention, so expect lots of fabulous photos and interviews, along with a full review following the event. General entry tickets are available online for only £6 for adults and £4 for under 14s (under 5s are free), but unfortunately the early bird tickets have sold out.

For tickets more information about Wigan Comic Con, please check out their website www.wigancomiccon.co.uk or Facebook page here where you can also find a link to the event. Those of you in the North West, please help support local up and coming events by heading over to Wigan on 22nd June and checking out all of the hard work that has gone into spreading geek pride out of the big cities and across the UK!
