Video from I Am Rogue gives some insight into the upcoming pilot for NBC’s ‘Constantine’. David S. Goyer the pilots producer/writer says,
“He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting,”
So Constantine will actually look like Constantine. Goyer then goes on to state that,
“Quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC Universe, should we move forward, will be showing up. … I think we would try to bring in some of the other occult figures.”
Whilst this probably brings to mind Justice League Dark one of the characters homes in the new DC universe, older fans will recall that originally Constantine featured in Alan Moore’s classic Saga of the Swamp Thing. In this title Constantine appeared alongside Swamp Thing, Deadman, The Phantom Stranger, Sargon The Sorcerer, The Spectre, Zatarra and his daughter Zatanna, Etrigan The Demon and more, in the classic ‘A Murder of Crows’ story.
This shows that with good writing Constantine can co-exist with other DC characters.
One problem that Goyer highlights is Constantine’s chain smoking, as much a part of the character as flying is to Superman, is a problem for the network with Goyer stating that they are in ‘negotiations’ about it. For anyone not familiar with the character John Constantine’s chain smoking is a classic character trait owing to his working class roots and has featured at the core of some of the best stories featuring the character, see Garth Ennis’ ‘Dangerous Habits’.
It begs the question if smoking is a problem for the network then what about the other elements associated with the character like drugs, occultism, black magic, demons, angry gods and lets not forget plenty of sex.
