Obituary of a UK gamer’s childhood – Trocadero to close permanently

Sad news for UK gamer geeks – the London Trocadero in Picadilly Circus is set to close permanently on February 25th. That sound you’re hearing is the collective “Noooooooooooooooo!” of gamers far and wide lamenting for their arcade game-playing childhood.

To be fair it’s been a long time coming. Many think the Trocadero died a long time ago when the Funland Arcade (SEGA World) closed down, but the site still hosted some arcade cabinets here and there on the lower floor.

As a result of the closure all the arcade cabinets are up for sale, though most are in a state of disrepair. The arcade owners have been given a 2 week notice before the final shutdown, with the landlord of the site advising the reason for the closure is to make way for a new luxury hotel complex. Yeah. ‘Cos we need more of those.

If you’re in the area, go and play on some games while you can, and try to feel like I did when I went there at the tender age of 15… unfortunately it no longer looks like this:
