The Charon Continuum was set up by Dominic Archer to fulfil two objectives: to give aspiring creatives a place to show off their work, and to give sci-fi fans a brand spanking new universe to sink their teeth into. Their ambitious project aims to build an expanded universe on a par with the behemoth that is Star Wars, with not only comics, but prose, animation, art, and pretty much everything else your crazy minds can imagine.
The setting is the year 2105, where China and India have risen to become the two big world powers, and wormhole travel has just been brought to the mainstream, giving the people of Earth access to interstellar travel for the first time. From there on in, it only gets better- the full storyline is only available to contributors to avoid spoilers for the readers, but rest assured that it’s not just a vague idea and a parental shooing-out to go play in the sandbox; these guys know what they’re doing. They have Plans, and I think the capital P is justified.
Lest potential readers think that Charon Continuum will be a free-for-all of hack writing and terrible fanart, they have a commitment to putting out the best work they can- not just to make themselves look better, but also to help their creators out. If a submission is not quite up to standard, they will give you some notes on it, so you can make some changes and resubmit the work. Speaking as a writer, there is nothing more precious than feedback notes. Nothing. Too often you’re given either a “Yeah, great” or a “No thanks”, and neither of those are helpful in the least, so for that reason alone I’d urge any aspiring creatives to get in on this.
“But Laura!” you cry, gripping your monitor in both fists and screaming with foaming mouth and bloodshot eyes. “How do I get involved?” Well, first you should probably get a rabies shot, and second, you should go to the Charon Continuum website and have a look at the information pack. Then write/draw/sing/animate to your little heart’s content. And if you just want to read/watch some awesome stuff, go there anyway and just see what’s what.
